What Behçet's UK does

Caring for all affected by this rare, complex and lifelong condition; promoting research into the cause, effects, treatment and management of Behçet’s

Aims of the Society

Behçet’s UK (formerly Behçet’s Syndrome Society) was formed in 1983 by Judith Buckle (1950-1997). Its main aims are to:

  • Provide information and support for people with Behçet’s and for those who care for them.
  • Provide financial aid for those in hardship caused by Behçet’s.
  • Foster education, collaboration and networking in the medical and allied professions with an interest in Behçet’s.
  • Promote and assist with research into Behçet’s.
  • Promote the formation of patient support groups and awareness of this rare condition amongst appropriate influential institutions, authorities and decision-making bodies, and to provide them with detailed information about Behçet’s.

Services the Society provides:

  • Support groups: We have volunteers who run online and local Behçet’s support groups.
  • Online Patient Forum: Our forum hosted on HealthUnlocked allows you to discuss Behçet’s related issues anonymously with your peers. We also have Facebook groups that are exclusively for Behçet’s UK members.
  • Personal Grant Aid Fund: The Society manages a personal grant aid fund for members who are in financial hardship due to their Behçet’s.
  • Helpline: The Society provides a telephone helpline for its members.
  • Factsheets: Our medical factsheets are available free of charge from the Society and are written by medical professionals who specialise in Behçet’s.
  • Newsletters: Our quarterly newsletters are a member benefit and contain the latest society and research news as well as contributions from members and items of general interest.
  • Friends and Family Day: Every year we hold a friends and family day in a different part of the UK for our members as a chance to have fun and meet others affected by the condition.
  • Annual Conference: Our annual Conference and AGM is held in a different part of the UK every October and members are entitled to attend for free
  • Society merchandise: We sell merchandise to help raise funds for our Society and raise awareness of the condition.
