John & Mates (Malcolm, Greg, Martin, Mike & Lorraine)
Over the past few years, cycling has become more than a passion … it’s now one of my part time jobs as a Bikeability Cycling Instructor. it’s a great way to stay fit and healthy and it provides an occasional challenge for Behçet’s UK.
Back in 2014 I was privileged to take part in the Tour de Behçet’s riding from London to Paris. I’ll never forget being stopped just outside Biggin Hill airfield by a relative of a Behçet’s patient who was amazed a group were fundraising for such a rare condition. The sense of camaraderie was immense over those four days of cycling so when someone mentioned the Bike for Behçet’s challenge I was keen to take part to recreate that same sense of camaraderie.
If I could help raise some funds and raise awareness … bring it on, plus I don’t need an excuse to get out and ride.
The initial challenge of 226 miles was achieved so another 226 miles was added and then another. To date I’ve ridden just short of 1,000 miles during the 13 weeks.
The team have raised a fantastic sum of money, helped raised awareness of Behçet’s and certainly helped with the mental and physical health of those taking part.
The other upside to doing any cycling challenge are the three C’s:
Cafe … need somewhere to stop and catch your breath
Coffee … a good cup helps fuel the miles
Cake … no ride would be complete without a good slice of cake,
Thanks to everyone for their support and I look forward to the next challenge
John
What I’ve been very impressed by is the camaraderie of all the group and especially the determination of those taking part who are living with Behçet’s, many leading very busy lives. It’s a privilege to be part of the journey. 50 miles short of 8 times the target miles.
